Should We Celebrate Lent and Easter?

"So many 'Christian' denominations practice or celebrate Lent. I know that the Bible is clear about Passover, but what about the 40 days of Lent? Giving something up? Ash Wednesday? Is there any Biblical basis for these things? How do I explain to friends and family who practice them (Catholic and other) why I don't? Thanks."
